Congratulations to all in Daisy Pulls It Off

What a fantastic opening night! Daisy really did pull it off playing to an almost full house! The KLT certainly was filled with laughter tonight and as the audience left the theatre, comments of ‘Great, so so funny, fabulous!’ were heard amongst the crowd.

Here are a just a few of the comments we have received about Daisy – ‘I just wanted to say what a GREAT production that was tonight!! My three girls wanted to see the play as their babysitter had a part, and I enjoyed it just as much or more than they did! That was SO much fun and everyone did an excellent job! Thank you!’

‘It was brilliant – just brilliant! I can’t remember the last time I laughed that much.’

Congratulations to all cast and crew! Our audiences members sang your praises as they left our little theatre this week. Thank you for thoroughly entertaining us all and giving us a wonderful experience at Kuwait Little Theatre.

An Evening With Andrew Lloyd Webber:’An awesome show!’

An absolutely amazing weekend was had by all the cast and crew of ’An Evening with Andrew Lloyd Webber’. The cast gave all three audiences wonderful memories as they sang their way through ALW’s musical timeline, with interesting narration from Paul Tunbridge. The collection of songs was dazzling, including numbers from well known shows such as Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Cats, Phantom of the Opera, Sunset Boulevard and many more. There really was something for everyone’s musical taste was an evening of beautiful music. Director and producer, Mike Ricketts and Helen Newton did a spectacular job of leading the vocalists to complete success!

Many audience members commented on how they were the best vocals they had heard in a long time and one audience member told us he hated musicals, had walked out of Evita in London but thought that our show was “Absolutely awesome!” Well done everybody!

Exciting New Season!

We are happy and excited to announce the shows for the rest of the 2012 – 2013 season!

In February, newcomers Alison Kent and Peter Clark will start things off with the hilarious Daisy Pulls it Off, a wacky tale of Daisy Meredith and the girls of the exclusive Grangewood School for Young Ladies. In March, Mike Ricketts will bring you an evening with the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. In April, Annike Jones brings the ladies of Chinquapin Parish to the KLT stage in Steel Magnolias. The season will end with Kirsty McDonagh’s revival of the hit show Grease.

“It was disappointing to see the Little Theater in Ahmadi so empty on this Wednesday evening as I sat down to take in their latest production, “Bat Boy”. I had to wonder if the warning on the show flyer had turned people off or if the Kuwait theater-going public are really that fickle as to not support a lesser known show. Either way, the lack of audience didn’t appear to deter the cast from giving it their all and I found myself quickly drawn into the unfolding story from the opening scene.

For those who may not know the show it is difficult to do justice to the story in a review without spolier alerts which always upset me – as you can’t help but read them even though you know you shouldn’t if you are yet to see the production. For that reason I am going to avoid talking in detail about the content other than to say this is a tale of human and animal nature, cleverly woven together with an eclectic set of catchy music, warm comedy and exciting action. It is indeed, as some have already said on the KLT’s Facebook page, a morality play of sorts though that makes it sound heavier and less entertaining than it is as a musical comedy, a genre it definitely belongs in.

From arrival at the K.L.T. an impressive cave opening surrounds the illuminated curtains and sets the scene for something dark and mysterious to unfold. And without abandon it surely does. The small cast playing some cute and clever character doubling in places bring to life the tale of a half boy, half bat, found in a cave and his integration with village life.

There is some superb acting, and singing, from the principal cast. Luke Zaccaro, as Bat Boy, (with scarily real bat ears by the make up department), is exceptionally versatile as the growing half humanoid, incredibly nimble (“How does he back spring onto the cave wall like that?”), and sings with passion and color even through the fangs and blood. Julie Bowling as Meredith, his adoptive mother, also gives an emotionally charged performance which tugs the heart strings in places as events spiral out of her control. John Peaveler as the frustrated husband and vet, Dr. Parker, brings a lyrical vocal to his dark role hitting some big notes that, with the backing of the excellent live band, set the stage alight (and no doubt made a few hearts flutter!). For me though the vocal performance of the night was from Laura Zaccaro as Bat Boy’s adoptive sister, Shelley, both in her Act Two duet, “Inside Your Heart” and the Finale – a haunting, beautiful voice.

In the supporting cast, performances from Hassan Rawas as Mrs Taylor and Rev. Hightower brought comic gold to the stage, as too did Stephen Grimes as the girly Lorraine, though his rap number as Rick Taylor was also especially impressive – and one of the unexpected elements of this eclectic musical theater score. Brad Manker also shone in many of his guises during the evening along with regulars Kristen Falcioni and Sharon Williams proving that the K.L.T. girls can ‘drag up’ just as well as the boys.

Children Children

Musical support from the entire ensemble, not least the hard working ‘widow chorus’, who also made most of the scenery changes, was wonderful with some exciting harmonies in parts. The only thing that continues to let down this first rate little venue is their sound system which at times make it near impossible to hear the lyrics over the music and all too regularly leave the cast sounding as if they are singing in a shower. In a show such as this, where the story develops slowly through dialogue and song, sound clarity is so critical and all I can do is say, again, that an investment in a new sound system would please all us audience members – guaranteed.

Bat Boy is clearly a complex show in theme, content and performance, and while, in the first act, scenes were individually strong there was perhaps an element of flow lost between them as the Little Theater team changed up the set between the Parker family home and the Village Council meetings. That said, Act Two sailed effortlessly, and elegantly, from scene to scene with some effective use of lighting and quick costume changes, and, as the plot unfolded towards its exciting – if slightly odd – conclusion, I was left feeling moved and certainly entertained by the evening despite its less than happy ending.

Overall, the Little Theater’s production is beautifully staged, well costumed and presented with a sense of style that is sometimes lacking up there. This is, of course, still amateur theater but as I overheard one lady saying in the intermission – “At times I thought I was in the West End”. That says a great deal and whether you rate the show or not, (and it surely cannot be likened in style or content to recent offerings such as Glee, Hairspray and Mamma Mia), the production is whole heartedly worth seeing; an ambitious project, well executed by the country’s only English language theater troupe. Kudos to Director/Producer Tim Waddell for stepping outside the box and bringing something new to Kuwait, and to the whole team for giving me such a first rate night of live theater.”
